Halsey To Play Red Rocks This Summer

Angsty pop sensation Halsey will return to Denver this summer, taking over Red Rocks Amphitheatre during “The Manic World Tour” on July 27. The “Bad At Love” singer will bring along pop/hip-hop musician blackbear and rock band PVRIS making for a genre-spanning triple threat. Halsey’s forthcoming performance marks a return to the iconic venue for the performer, who last hit the amphitheater in the summer of 2018.

Halsey has not released an album since hopeless fountain kingdom in 2017, but that didn’t stop her from releasing the chart-topping one-off “Without Me” in the fall of 2018, her first Billboard 100 number 1 hit as a solo artist. Her highly-anticipated new album, Manic is slated to drop on January 17. The album, the Grammy-nominated singer’s third official release, has been preceded by hits like “Graveyard” and “SUGA’s Interlude” featuring South Korea’s burgeoning pop group BTS.

The Chainsmokers Reveal “World War Joy Tour,” coming to Pepsi Center

Award-winning electropop duo The Chainsmokers are coming to Denver’s Pepsi Center November 19, according to an announcement made Tuesday. The stop is part of the band’s “World War Joy Tour”, which will include Australian pop rock band 5 Seconds of Summer and country-turned-pop singer Lennon Stella.

The Chainsmokers, composed of Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, found fame with the release of their single “#SELFIE” in 2014. Their mark on the pop scene continued to spread with the release of songs such as “Roses,” “Don’t Let me Down,” and “Paris.” They’ve flexed their production skills by pairing with artists like Coldplay, Halsey, and recently paired with 5 Seconds of Summer for the song “Who Do You Love.”

You may not need to be a fan of electronic dance music to appreciate The Chainsmoker’s upcoming date with Denver. Although their music is a product of the times — the sarcastic awareness in the song “#SELFIE.” is no coincidence — the duo has a knack for seeing trends, then transcending them.

After 11 Years, Beta Nightclub To Close In 2019

One of Denver’s lit up and volatile nightclubs is set to get its fire extinguished. After 11 years, Beta Nightclub will be shutting its doors on January 5, 2019. For years, the digital dance music (EDM) venue drew massive celebrities, from Deadmau5 into Armin Van Buren, to the tune of lasers, smoke cannons and deafening bass. At one point dubbed one of the top 25 best clubs of all time by Billboard Magazine, in addition to taking the number one spot for dancing clubs in America by Rolling Stone at 2013, the loss of the place doesn’t just alter the dance community, but Denver as a whole.  Beta Nightclub was the destination to listen to cutting-edge digital music by the hottest up and comers in addition to the special opportunities to catch the pros in relatively close quarters. Citing the need to take time and recalibrate, Beta has decided to bid farewell.

While not cited in their official parting announcement, one cannot deny that Temple Nightclub, brand new to town, embodied their eyesight “club culture evolving” far better than Beta had in the past couple of years. Coupled with the abundance of similarily EDM-focused clubs lining South Broadway — in one place — that the decline of Beta was only a matter of time. The closing perhaps even caught many at Beta off-guard, as they had several shows lined up into 2019, such as Arty, Luca Lush plus also a rare live performance for its elusive Danger. Likewise, while January 5 has been deemed the official closing date, the last events have not yet been announced.

While there’s no word on what will finally fill Beta’s space, whatever it is, has got a great deal to live up to.

From the archive: When a 1968 crowd trashed Red Rocks over a canceled Aretha Franklin concert

Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul,” is known for inspiring awe, motivating listeners to dance, and — on at least one occasion in Colorado — sparking a riot.

On Aug. 4, 1968, Franklin was scheduled to perform a Sunday night concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. But she went on stage to announce that she would not be performing because she hadn’t been paid by the program’s impresario, according to Denver Post archives.

Denver Post via Getty Images

About 200 people in the audience stormed the stage, destroying chairs, music stands, a grand piano, footlights, electronic equipment and anything else they could get their hands on. Bottles and rocks were thrown onstage. Metal trash barrels were rolled down the grandstand.

As police moved in, people went into the surrounding park, setting fire to trees, bushes and trash. Despite the chaos, there was little fighting and no one was injured. Three people were arrested, and that was because they were suspected of stealing electronic equipment.

The riot resulted in a one-year ban on rock shows at the venue, according to the Denver Public Library.

Per Franklin’s contract, she was to be paid $20,000 before the performance, according to the original Post story. The New Yorker reportedd that Franklin always demanded to be paid in cash on the spot or she would not go onstage. The cash would go into her handbag, which would either stay with her security team or come on stage with her. The reason: She grew up in an era when Ray Charles and B.B. King would get ripped off, according to The New Yorker.

Franklin, the woman behind classics “Think,” “I Say a Little Prayer” and “Respect,” died Thursday morning in Detroit at the age of 76 after battling advanced pancreatic cancer.

Make sure to watch until the end for some laughs mixed with realness.  Find the song here.

Don’t let the smooth and sweet sounding music from this song breeze right past you, this song from Move Shake Pause Repeat has a very direct message for the audience. As the video begins we see a myriad of images, flashing past us in a kaleidoscopic fashion. At first, the images seem random and playful but as the song and music progress, we see the images are much like the content we notice as we sift through television channels. The video is a statement that shows us that if we let media and advertisement sneak under our noses, then we will allow them to obliviously influence us with our blissful ignorance. What is there to say about Wildermiss who hasn’t already been said? As one for Denver’s bands leading the charge onto the mainstream, Wildermiss is a complete package of strong indie-rock. The foursome, certain to conjure semblances into the like Local Natives and Of Monsters and Men, attracts a special mixture of vulnerability and raw electricity to each point they perform on. Performing at Velorama, the band is driving a wave of momentum coming off a national tour that included a sold-out night at the Bluebird Theater. If they continue at the speed that they are, that knows, one day this band could possibly be a future headliner.
