Five things we Heard from the Broncos’ 24-23 loss to the Chicago Bears on Saturday night:

1. The Broncos don’t even have a penalty problem.

For decades, officials have thrown too many flags at the preseason to enforce new rules and give gamers a baseline for what they could and may ’t perform.

The Broncos and Bears were each called for 14 enforced penalties. The Broncos (24 penalties) are one of nine teams with at least 20 penalties through two preseason games. Saturday’s game was a three-hour, 18-minute slough.

“I’m hopeful it won’t look like this,” coach Vance Joseph stated. “If it’s close, they’re throwing (the flag). I get it. It’s preseason. They wish to alter the behavior. It occurs every preseason, but it feels like it’s more this preseason. Hopefully, (if ) Week 1 starts, it kind of calms down a little bit. It generally does. ”

The Broncos, who had 21 penalties from the first two preseason matches last year, have just one lowering-the-head-to-initiate contact punishment — by cornerback Isaac Yiadom against Chicago, and it was a barbarous call. They had just two roughing-the-passer penalties from the Bears game.

2. The Broncos’ allowance for error from the secondary is razor thin.

Among those Broncos’ greatest defensive players in both preseason games was security Will Parks. Therefore it was about when he limped off the field against Chicago with a knee injury.

Joseph reported the injury was a “contusion; he didn’t even have some structural damage,” a lucky break for a secondary that’s nicked up.

Kelly was 7-of-9 passing for 90 yards and a touchdown against Chicago.

“I feel that the more repetitions I get, the more rhythm I’ll have,” Kelly stated. “I must add way more function. I must see things far quicker. ”

4. Don’t read too much into Garett Bolles getting second-team work.

What’s the old saying? “If you don’t enjoy the boos, do something about it. ” Lynch has done nothing this preseason to give those booing fans a reason to close up.

“I simply haven’t been playing nicely,” Lynch stated. “That’s not acceptable, particularly playing here. You’t have to perform well and give your team an chance to win every week. … I want to be that the (beginning ) quarterback. I don’t wish to be a backup, and I don’t even wish to be third-string. ”

The Broncos are somewhat less than two weeks from a significant choice: Status quo with their three quarterbacks or even move on from Lynch. It won’t affect this year’s win-loss listing, but giving up to a first-round pick is always a huge thing.

From the archive: When a 1968 crowd trashed Red Rocks over a canceled Aretha Franklin concert

Aretha Franklin, the “Queen of Soul,” is known for inspiring awe, motivating listeners to dance, and — on at least one occasion in Colorado — sparking a riot.

On Aug. 4, 1968, Franklin was scheduled to perform a Sunday night concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. But she went on stage to announce that she would not be performing because she hadn’t been paid by the program’s impresario, according to Denver Post archives.

About 200 people in the audience stormed the stage, destroying chairs, music stands, a grand piano, footlights, electronic equipment and anything else they could get their hands on. Bottles and rocks were thrown onstage. Metal trash barrels were rolled down the grandstand.

As police moved in, people went into the surrounding park, setting fire to trees, bushes and trash. Despite the chaos, there was little fighting and no one was injured. Three people were arrested, and that was because they were suspected of stealing electronic equipment.

The riot resulted in a one-year ban on rock shows at the venue, according to the Denver Public Library.

Per Franklin’s contract, she was to be paid $20,000 before the performance, according to the original Post story. The New Yorker reportedd that Franklin always demanded to be paid in cash on the spot or she would not go onstage. The cash would go into her handbag, which would either stay with her security team or come on stage with her. The reason: She grew up in an era when Ray Charles and B.B. King would get ripped off, according to The New Yorker.

Franklin, the woman behind classics “Think,” “I Say a Little Prayer” and “Respect,” died Thursday morning in Detroit at the age of 76 after battling advanced pancreatic cancer.

Get To Know The Local Artists Playing Velorama this weekend

Denver’s most bumping bike music festival, Velorama is right round the corner — bringing with it, three days of booze, bands and needless to say, bikes. Moving down August 17 to 19, this year’s festival will become headlined by none other than Matt and Kim, Modest Mouse and The Growlers. Though the lineup is topped with a solid set of actors, the genuine meat is located at the undercard, chalk filled with amazing regional bands which aren’t to be overlooked. Rockies lack clutch hits, lose rubber game against Pirates at Coors Field

The road ahead looks daunting for the Rockies. Or perhaps it presents a prime opportunity.

It all depends on the point of view, as well as the Rockies’ batting average with runners in scoring position.

Yet Marquez also struck out the side in the fourth inning, needing only nine pitches to pull off the second “immaculate inning” in franchise history.

Marquez whiffed 10, but another rocky start put Colorado behind early. Pittsburgh scored two runs in the first inning on four hits, the key blows an RBI double by Gregory Polanco and an RBI single by Colin Moran. The Rockies have given up 100 runs in the first inning this season, the most in the majors, and have posted a 7.74 first-inning ERA, the highest in the majors. Marquez’s slow starts — his first-inning ERA is 10.17 — continue to haunt him.

1. Bradley Chubb

Pirates rout Rockies with two big innings, spoiling Chad Bettis’ return to the rotation

Rockies manager Bud Black said Monday that he was confident in where Chad Bettis was, heath-wise and stuff-wise, as the right-hander returned to the majors from a finger blister that had sidelined him since July 3.

But Tuesday’s blowout at the hands of Pittsburgh showed Bettis — slotted back into the starting rotation in the wake of Antonio Senzatela‘s shoulder soreness — hadn’t quite shaken off the rust indicated by the stat line of his last rehab start, a four-run, six-inning outing last week for Triple-A Albuquerque.

“The game wasn’t even halfway over yet, his pitch count was down and he threw a mistake pitch to Mercer — that was a back-breaker, no doubt,” Black said of the decision. “But down 5-0 after four, we have a chance to come back in that game. But the results were less than ideal, as the right-hander surrendered three additional runs before being spelled by Jake McGee with two outs.

Before McGee could get the Rockies out of the frame, Harrison furthered the damage by hitting a two-run dinger to push Pittsburgh’s advantage to 10-0 and send many purple-clad fans immediately streaming for the exits.

Taillon then continued to work around traffic, as Colorado finished 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position while leaving seven runners stranded. One of the lone bright spots was Charlie Blackmon‘s 1,000th career hit, a single in the sixth.

“He had all his pitches working all night — a great running fastball going away from lefties and into right-handers at mid-90s, a great cutter with a slider and a good curveball,” Carlos Gonzalez said. “We were able to put up a lot of traffic, but pitched a really good game and he was still able to go the distance because he didn’t use a lot of pitches.”

The Colorado offense finally produced in the eighth, but Gonzalez’s two-RBI double in the frame was far from enough to get the Rockies (60-53) back into the ballgame.

“It’s a tough loss, but tomorrow we have an opportunity to win a series,” Gonzalez said.
